All veterinary physiotherapists are required to work under veterinary referral as outlined within the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. This is vitally important as some specific conditions do not respond to physiotherapy and there are underlying conditions where physiotherapy is contraindicated and medications when physiotherapy cannot be used.

When maintenance veterinary physiotherapy only is required for example a sporting horse that has no obvious illness or injury, treatment can be completed without veterinary referral however Gavin recommends that a veterinary referral form is always completed.

Working under referral enables information sharing and ensures the animal receives the best treatment and care.
